Trip Highlights

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: San Jose (Arrival)

We'll greet you at the airport and transfer you to a cozy hotel. Here we will go over the trip and answer any questions about the adventure that lies ahead.

Day 2: Pacuare River (Whitewater Rafting)

After a hearty and wholesome breakfast we have a 45 minute drive to the Pacuare River. From the van, we hike 15 minutes to the "put-in". Here we kick off for two days of whitewater adventure tackling (28 km's/15 miles) of class III-IV rapids. The first day is a short paddle day, through tropical rain forest, allowing for plenty of time to explore this pristine river valley. Tonight we overnight at a luxurious riverside campsite. The tents are permanently mounted on wooden platforms, facing the river. The gardens are beautifully manicured. There is an open air dining room and kitchen, washrooms with flush toilets, sinks and numerous hammocks strung up to relax in. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Pacuare River - Arenal Volcano (Whitewater Rafting)

We wake up in the rain forest, feast on a breakfast made for champions, then change back into our rafting gear for our second day on the Pacuare. Todays section has bigger, thrilling rapids and is more continuous. We plunge downstream through a dramatic landscape of tangled rain forest, cascading waterfalls and carved canyons. Along the way we stop for a side hike up to some natural water slides and the hearty in the group can cliff jump into the river. We "take-out" near the town of Siquirres and then drive to La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal Volcano. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Arenal Volcano (Biking and Hot Springs)

Today we switch gears and bike along an old road connecting the Arenal Dam with the main entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park. We pedal towards the village of El Castillo, biking on a quiet road surrounded by dense forest and a few cattle farms. There are good chances of seeing and hearing howling monkeys, coatis, and many tropical birds like toucans, egrets and king fishers. We'll stop for a picnic on the shore of Lake Arenal where there's time to take a refreshing swim. The volcano is visible during most of the ride and we can often hear it rumbling while we bike. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy some of the spa treatments at the resort, soak in the steamy hotsprings and relax in the tropical rainforest environment. (B,L)

Day 5: Arenal to Monteverde (Horseback Riding)

Today we're picked up from our hotel, transferred to a ranch where we'll saddle up on big, healthy, well-trained horses, for a 4 hour horseback ride to Santa Elena, the gateway to the Monteverde Cloud forest. This is a great way to travel between the two places and offers great views of the rumbling Arenal Volcano, the windswept lake, the lush mountains and typical farms. The remainder of the afternoon and evening are free to hike through the cloud forest, explore the Quaker town of Monteverde or just relax for coffee and pastries in one of the many bakeries in town. (B)

Day 6: Manuel Antonio Beach (Ziplining)

This morning we transfer to Manuel Antonio Beach, on the Pacific Coast. We'll transfer to a comfortable hotel, freshen up and then head to the forest. Up until now we've stayed on terra firma, but it's time to ascend to the rain forest canopy - a thrilling way to view nature. Secured in a harness, 100 feet off the ground, we'll traverse on cables between the trees, viewing the vegetation as a bird. Up high in the rain forest canopy we can observe one of the earth's most complex biosphere and capture images of the different levels of the rain forest canopy. We return to our hotel in the afternoon and the remainder of the day is a leisure to enjoy the beach. Optional activities on the beach include hiking in Manuel Antonio National Park, renting boogie boards and playing in the ocean surf. (B)

Day 7: Manuel Antonio Beach (Sea Kayaking)

This morning we set out on the Pacific Ocean paddling sea kayaks through mangroves at the Isla Damas Estuary. We'll float below the lush forest canopy, silently watching a spectacular variety of tropical birds, anteaters, and playful white face monkeys. We return to the beach in the afternoon and have the rest of the day at leisure to relax. Overnight at the Hotel Espadilla or similar. (B,L)

Day 8: Manuel Antonio Beach (Yoga)

This morning we start the day with a morning hatha or ashtanga yoga class on the beach. By noon, we'll transfer to the airport in Quepos to catch a local flight back to San Jose. Upon arrival back into San Jose, we'll be met and transfered to the Hotel Britannia or similar for our last night in Costa Rica. The evening is at leisure. (B)

Day 9: Depature

A BikeHike Adventures representative will transfer you to the international airport for your return flight home. (B)
