This liquid adventure is built specifically for water enthusiasts. Launching out of Placencia, in Southern Belize, we have four days of paddling and snorkeling along the longest reef in the western hemisphere. In our sleek sea kayaks we navigate between a labyrinth of deserted islands scattered along the warm and clear Caribbean Sea. The ocean is rich and colorful, abundant with exotic tropical fish and coral walls that plunge deep into the earth. When we're not on the water, we're stretched out in hammocks, chilling beneath coconut palms in the refreshing ocean breeze. This trip has the perfect blend of activity and relaxation to feed your spirit and enrich your soul.
Upon arrival into the Placencia airstrip, a BikeHike Adventures representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Placencia is a small, quiet village on a 13 mile/21 km long Peninsula bordered by the Caribbean Sea. This evening we will meet for a welcome dinner and briefing about what the next few days hold in store. (D)
Our adventure begins with a boat transfer to Silk Caye, one of the main islands of the trio of Silk Cayes. The white sand beaches and breezy palm trees of these three tiny islands create an idyllic Caribbean escape. They are located on the longest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere and form part of the Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes Marine Reserve. The reef around the islands has an abundance of tropical fish and coral species. The first part of our day is spent familiarizing ourselves with our kayaks and gear and having an introductory session in basic paddling and self-rescue techniques. This afternoon we'll get to practice our techniques by paddling to some nearby islands for snorkeling. This evening we'll camp on Silk Caye, and feast on a delicious dinner of fresh seafood caught and prepared today by our epicurean guide/chef.(L,D)
After breakfast we paddle to Hatchet Caye. Hatchet Caye is a private island with spectacular snorkeling opportunities. After a snorkel around the island we paddle back to Silk Caye for lunch and some time to relax in a hammock under the shade of a palm tree. This afternoon we'll paddle along the barrier reef itself. Weather permitting we may paddle outside the reef for a brief experience of the open sea. You may wish to snorkel along a section of the reef before paddling back to our base camp. Late afternoons and evenings are yours for relaxing in a hammock or exploring the island. Overnight camping on Silk Caye beneath a brilliant sky. (B,L,D)
Today we will paddle to a sand spit which acts as a local fishing camp. We'll jump out of our kayaks here and snorkel in the area amongst massive coral structures. Here we frequently spot one of the beauties of the reef, the queen angel fish. After lunch back on Silk Caye we will paddle to some patch reefs for more opportunities to snorkel, exploring new coral formations and colorful fish. Overnight camping on Silk Caye. (B,L,D)
This morning we set off in our kayaks paddling to Little Water Caye. This island serves as a research station for the monitoring of commercial fish populations and annual whale shark migration through the Gladden Spit Reserve. This is a fairly large island and there's time to explore the surroundings. After a snorkel we can either paddle back to Silk Cayes or jump in the support boat for an easy trip back. This day is our longest paddle. After lunch we pack up our gear and boat back to Placencia. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in Placencia. (B,L)
We'll transfer you to the airstrip in Placencia to connect with your flight back to Belize City or onwards for extensions.
