Two Successful Summits Up Mount Kilimanjaro

For those inquiring minds wanting to know if I made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro twice in 14-days, I did. It was a challenge, and I only had a few hours to relax in between the two climbs, but it was absolutely exhilarating.

I traveled with two great groups, mostly from California and one Austrian, who happens to be a cosmonaut. Together we ascended up the Machame Route, pole, pole (slowly, slowly) to the Uhuru Peak, at 19,350 feet. The terrain is varied starting in a muddy rainforest, to scrub and brush, to a misty lobelia forest and finally a barren lunar landscape strewn with giant boulders that spewed from deep inside the volanco so many years ago.

We hiked between 6 to 9 hours daily, but summit day was a long and steady 18 hour journey. Donned in lots of warm layers, we set off at midnight, guided by our headlamps and one guide or porter per person. Our client to staff ratio was really high, just to ensure everyone had help in case they had to turn back due to altitude. At 6:30am we made it to Stella Point, just in time for a brilliant sunrise on the horizon. The sunrise is so powerful when you've been hiking all night at -20 C. There's a renewed energy and the sunshine truly warms you from the core.

To conclude, the two trips were truly remarkable and I'll be posting some of my photos on our blog shortly, so do stay tuned. Also check www.bikehike.com soon to see the new Tanzania itinerary, that is going to include BikeHikers mountain biking across golden plains with Maasai warrior and exotic wildlife.
